3rd Anniversary - 2008
World Diabetes Day 2008 -3rd Anniversary Celebration
Diabetes is a serious medical condition affecting more and more people around the world. WHO has estimated a 3 fold increase in this dreaded disease over the course of the next 10-15 years. This unprecedented rise in diabetes is believed to be mainly due to our changing lifestyles and dietary pattern. This problem is all the more serious in countries in the South Asian region such as Sri Lanka due to the added problem of lack of awareness.
Healthy Life Clinic has continued to promote public awareness of Diabetes over the last 3 years of its existence and is planning to celebrate its 3 rd anniversary with a Free Public Seminar at BMICH on the 15 th of November.
The seminar will be opened by Prof Ravindra Fernando who is the chairperson of the Diabetes Prevention Task Force of Sri Lanka. There will be a Guest appearance of the famous actress and talk show host Mrs. Shabitha Perera.
Key Note Speaker, Dr Uditha Bulugahapitiya, Consultant Endocrinologist at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, will deal with the topic of diabetes and its perils and the steps one can take to prevent this disease as well as for those who have it, how they can prevent further complications.
This will be followed by a very interesting patients' perspective of the disease, presented by one of the patient members of Healthy life Clinic. A patients' perspective of diabetes is something one doesn't here very much and as this disease requires a huge effort by the patient to control is , it is important to understand what is their view and how diabetes has affected their lives. This is the first of its kind and it will be interesting to see how it goes.
The 3 rd order of the day, will be a stimulating question and answer session with the expert Dr S. Siribaddana, Consultant Endocrinologist , on anything about diabetes which will give the audience a chance to clarify their burning questions about diabetes and will open up any other un-discussed topics in this field.
Last but not least will be the prize giving and raffle draw. During the 2 months leading up to the event a race was held to see who could lose the biggest amount of weight and who reduced their blood glucose level the most. The winners of this race will be announced and prizes will be awarded, and opportunity will be given to find out how they did it. The raffle draw is open to all and the prizes range from free glucometers to pharmacy gift vouchers.
During the course of the event, there will be many information booths, which will provide information re exercise, diet, yoga and stress, food supplements for diabetes, free blood sugar testing, blood pressure testing, checking your BMI, and also a booth where you can calculate your risk of heart disease, and also your risk of developing diabetes.
These events are continually thought of and executed by healthy Life Clinic, in a bid to improve the public's awareness of diseases such as diabetes which has created much suffering to the people and is one of the biggest cause of death. This year's event is structured in a way that will help the public understand that.
